Guide to second car insurance

Many people in the UK need insurance for more than one car. This guide explains how second car insurance works, how named drivers fit in, and what to think about before you change your policy.

Insuring a second car

You are allowed to insure as many cars as you want. Some companies offer multi-car insurance, so you can choose to insure more than one vehicle during the quote process.

Alternatively, you can simply organise insurance for your second car separately.

When you insure any car there are two types of drivers:

  • Main Driver: The person who drives the car most often
  • Named/Second Driver: A second person added to a car insurance policy.

If you’re insuring a second car, you can choose to be the main driver or named driver.

However, it’s important that, as the main driver, you are driving that car more than anyone else. If the wrong person is listed as the main driver, it can be seen as ‘fronting’. This can lead to claims being refused or the policy being cancelled.

Often, when people insure a second car, they are the main driver on one car and named driver on the second car.

Adding someone as a named driver can help if:

  • You share the car with a partner, friend, or family member
  • Someone else needs to use the car from time to time
  • You want another person to be able to drive in an emergency

Can I add a second car to my insurance policy?

Some insurers offer multi-car cover, where you manage more than one vehicle under the same account. Others ask you to take out a separate policy for each car. The rules depend on the company.

Already a Marshmallow customer? You can set up MultiCar and get a discount on your policies. To see if the MultiCar account is available to you:

  1. Open the Marshmallow app.
  2. Tap the pink Get a MultiCar quote button.
  3. Enter the details of the new vehicle you’d like to insure, and we’ll provide you with a quote.

Does adding a second car affect the insurance price?

Yes. Changes like these nearly always affect the price of your car insurance.

A second car normally needs its own quote. Each car is priced separately, based on its own level of risk. This means:

  • The cost for one car can be very different from the cost for another
  • You may pay more overall, even if each car is low mileage

It’s similar when adding a second driver. It might make your quote go up or down:

  • A very experienced, low-risk driver may reduce the price
  • A younger or higher-risk driver may increase it

What affects the price of second or additional car insurance?

When you ask for cover on another car, or add a new driver, insurers look at many of the same details as they would for a first car, including:

  • The age and experience of each driver
  • Any previous claims or driving convictions
  • How often the car will be used and for what
  • The car’s make, model, age, and value
  • Where the car is kept overnight
  • Security features such as alarms or immobilisers

These details help the insurer understand the level of risk. The higher the risk, the higher the price is likely to be. Learn more about what impacts your car insurance quote cost.

Can I add a second car temporarily?

If you need to use another car for a short time, you might think about temporary car insurance. This is separate cover that lasts for a few hours, days, or weeks. It usually sits alongside the main policy on the car.

However:

  • Temporary cover is not available to everyone
  • Many providers limit it by age, licence type, or driving history
  • People who are new to the UK may find it harder to get

Marshmallow does not currently offer temporary policies. If you need cover for a second car for more than a short period, you will usually need a standard policy for that car.

What is the cheapest way to insure a second car?

There is no single cheapest option because every driver and every car is different. However, you can often keep costs under control by:

Getting a separate quote for each car and comparing your options

  • Seeing if you can combine policies on a MultiCar account
  • Being accurate and honest with all the details you provide
  • Choosing a level of cover that matches how often the second car is used
  • Parking the car in a safe, secure place if you can
  • Avoiding fronting or any form of misrepresentation

In some cases, switching to a smaller, less powerful car or one with better security features can help lower the price. Low annual mileage can also make a difference with some insurers.

Does adding a second car affect my No Claims Discount (NCD)?

No Claims Discounts usually apply to a single policy, not across all cars you own.

This means:

  • NCD built up on one policy does not automatically apply to a second policy
  • Some insurers may offer ‘mirrored’ NCD, but this is not guaranteed
  • If you make a claim on one car, that usually affects the NCD for that car’s policy only. The second car’s NCD stays the same unless there is a claim on that policy too.

Because rules vary between insurers, it’s always worth checking how they handle NCD for multiple cars.

Does my insurance cover me to drive other cars?

Most policies in the UK do not automatically let you drive any car you like. Some fully comprehensive policies include something called ‘Driving Other Cars’ (DOC), but it:

  • Is not very common
  • Often only gives third-party cover
  • Usually has strict conditions

Because of this, you should always check your policy documents or ask your insurer before you drive a car that is not already listed on your policy. If you are not sure, it is safer to assume you are not covered.
